Michael Andrew Haggard

Michael Andrew Haggard, a Coral Gables, Florida native, distinguished himself in 25 trials working as an Assistant Public Defender before turning to personal injury law. After a year of practicing with a leading Miami personal injury firm, he joined The Haggard Law Firm, where he handles a broad array of cases, concentrating on pool drowning accidents, negligent security, wrongful death, unsafe premises, products liability, and insurance coverage matters.
In 2001, Haggard was named partner of the firm and gained a significant amount of national exposure in 2003 after winning two back-to-back record setting $100 million verdicts in cases dealing with pool accidents involving children. Recently, Haggard obtained his third $100 million verdict in November 2007 in a negligent security case considered to be the largest jury verdict award in history for that genre of case law.
He also obtained the first verdict in the nation dealing with the issue of cell phone distraction when he and his father, Wm. Andrew Haggard, won a $21 million verdict for Alicia Bustos in December of 2001.
As an “AV” rated attorney from the Martindale-Hubbell Directory, he has swiftly assumed positions of leadership in the Florida Justice Association. He is currently President-Elect and will be sworn in as the 50th President in June 2009 in Miami. Haggard’s other achievements include serving as past present of the Miami-Dade Justice Association as well as serving as a member of the American Association for Justice (Inadequate Security Section) and the Million Dollar Advocates Forum. He also holds membership in multiple legal organizations including The Florida Bar (Trial Lawyers Section), American Bar Association, Dade County Bar Association, Coral Gables Bar Association, Lawyer Pilots Bar Association, American Board of Trial Advocates, Southern Trial Lawyers Association, and the National Crime Victim Bar Association to which he was recently appointed to the Board of Directors.
Mr. Haggard has received numerous awards for his time and dedication devoted to his clients and the community, earning him recognition as one of the most highly regarded personal injury attorneys in the country. He has been honored to receive the Golden Eagle and Shoe Leather Awards from the Florida Justice Association and the Advocate of Justice Award from the National Crime Victims Bar Association. He was recently named a Most Effective Lawyer by the Daily Business Review for the second time, and is annually recognized as a Florida Trend Legal Elite Lawyer, a Florida Super Lawyer and one of the Best Lawyers in America.
His expertise in personal injury, pool drownings and negligent security cases has resulted in his being a highly sought after speaker at conventions and meetings across the country. Most recently he was a featured speaker for the National Crime Victim Bar Association where he spoke at a training institute focusing in Civil Justice for Victims of Crime in Florida. He has also been a guest speaker for the American Association of Community Justice Professionals and the annual ASIS Conference addressing security professionals on how to prevent these incidents from occurring at commercial properties and ultimately deterring legal action.
In addition to his legal endeavors, Michael Haggard is passionately committed to helping the community. He volunteers for the Community Partnership for the Homeless and helps to build homes with Habitat for Humanity. He is also a member of the Guardian Ad Litem Program. Mr. Haggard was also appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, a disease that runs in his family and Michael himself has been diagnosed. Above all, Michael Haggard is a devoted fan of the Florida State Seminoles and is an active member of the FSU Alumni Association.
Haggard earned his bachelors degree from Florida State University and his law degree from the University of Miami. He currently resides in South Florida with his wife Bekki and their two children Madison and Carson.
